From the intense look in his eyes, Lauren hadn’t been the only one affected by his touch. “Just tell me, what it is you want?”
“You want to know, angel?” Evan unbuckled his seat belt and leaned in to her. Lauren refused to cower and met him in the middle. She wasn’t going to allow him to intimidate her, as if he could. Lauren wasn’t afraid of Evan. He would never hurt her, of that, she was sure.
“Yes. You’ve been acting like a beast since the moment I opened the door. Is the damn outfit so bad?”
“Yes.”
“Fine, I’ll…”
“You’re not going to do anything but listen to me,” he thundered. “And saints be praised, if you even think of mentioning the word marshmallow again, I’m going to take you over my lap and spank some sense into you.”
Was he now? Lauren would just have to see about that. She was her father’s daughter and no one threatened her. Slow and deliberate, Lauren parted her lips and enunciated every syllable of the word, “Marsh-mal-low.”
Evan’s eyes widened in shock, much to her amusement, and then they narrowed in anger, much to her trepidation.
Oh shit.
Lauren wasn’t a coward, but she wasn’t an idiot either, yet she wasn’t going to back down. She was between a rock and a hard place but, unfortunately for her, Lauren couldn’t figure out which one was worse.
Without a saying another word, Evan started the car and pulled abruptly away from the side of the street. To Lauren’s dismay, he didn’t head in the direction of the party. Instead of taking a right, which would have led them up the hill to her father’s estate, he took a left, driving them to a densely unpopulated wooded area.
Evan drove for a mile or so down the lane before pulling the car over and killing the engine. He opened the car door and stepped out, all without saying a word. Lauren watched as he walked around the hood of the car to her door, and she resisted the childish urge to lock it and stick her tongue out. Instead, she unbuckled her own seat belt and waited for him to open her door.
When he did, she bound out of the car, intent on giving Evan a piece of her mind. That thought was completely erased as he took her arm in his firm grip and slammed her door.
“What, are you going to leave me out here as punishment for defying the all-great-and-powerful Evan?”
“No.” Evan marched her to the rear of the car and released her arm. “I’m going to do exactly what I said I’d do.”
